South-East of La Palma has a very peculiar volcanic landscape. Vines grow on the grey ashen slopes and yellow-encrusted Teneguia, the last volcano to erupt in the Canaries (in 1971). The Wine from the Canaries, particularly the malvasias - anglicised as Malmsey - was very popular in Britain and its colonies in the past: Shakespeare refers to it frequently, calling it "an absolutely penetrating wine," in Henry IV.

The main growing area has now been reduced to Fuencaliente, along with small amounts produced in Hoyo de Mazo and Las Breñas. A combination of rich volcanic earth and warm climate creates the perfect environment. The main wine produced is 'Teneguia' wine.

Though the day of Corpus Christi is celebrated throughout Spain with processions (often along streets decorated with flowers), in the little town of Villa de Mazo, they go one step further, making carpets, passages, halls, and, the signature of the town, archways, along the processional route. In the days and weeks before, the people have been busy gathering materials for this most colourful of fiestas, from the hills, countryside and the coastline. Flowers, shells, sand, petals, ears of corn, seeds, moss and all manner of natural materials are dried and used by ingenious craftsmen to decorate the streets and especially to create the impressive arches.
