La Palma receives almost all of its water supply due to the mar de nubes (sea of clouds), stratocumulus cloud at 1200-1600 m altitude, carried on the prevailing wind which blows from the north-east Trade Winds. Roque de Los Muchachos is located 2,426 m above sea level. This ensures that the Observatory installations are always above the so-called "sea of clouds" where the atmosphere, stabilised by the ocean, is clean and turbulence-free.

Garafía is situated on the northern coast of the island. Almost the whole space is busy for a magnificent representation of pines, considered as one of the better conserved of the island and of Canarias, with trees of great behavior and antiquity. The Canary Island pine is one of the most fire-resistant species in the world. In fact, just months after the blaze, the Canary Island pines had regained their characteristic green colour by sprouting needles.

The route passes along the norwest of the island towards El Time where there is an excellent viewpoint. From El Time, you'll see some amazing views of the Caldera and Aridane Valley
