La Palma is a high island in relation to its surface and it presents a very sharp and abrupt relief, providing to the big island very different climate landscapes. This is strongly felt going through the long tunnel that crosses the island from east to west, called "El tunel del tiempo" by the locals (playing with the dual meaning of the word "tiempo" in spanish: weather, time).

Beside the visitors' centre is the turn off for the scenic lookout of Mirador de La Cumbrecita. This lookout with its excellent views of the Caldera Park receives many visitors. On reaching the top, looking towards Riachuelo the cascade of clouds can frequently be seen sliding down the slope of Cumbre Nueva until, on becoming warmer and finding drier air on their descent, the water droplets evaporate and the clouds finally disappear at the foot of La Caldera.

Continuing to El Paso and Fuencaliente in the south of the island, there will be a trip to the volcano of San Antonio, where we can walk along the edge of the crater with a fantastic panoramic view of the Teneguía volcano (it last erupted as recently as 1971) the southern point of the island and the salt flats.
